Check first, then decide the compliance step
The terms NTN, filer and ATL are often used interchangeably, but they describe different things. Registration creates the taxpayer identity; the ATL confirms current active status. A current search is the safest starting point before applying filer-based tax treatment.
The tool does not require an Iris login or password.
Filer Status and NTN Registration Are Different
An NTN or CNIC-based FBR registration confirms that a taxpayer is enrolled for income-tax purposes. It does not, by itself, prove that the taxpayer is currently active on the ATL. A person can therefore have an Iris account and valid registration but still require return filing or another compliance step before active status is available.
When Is an ATL Check Useful?
Checking current status is useful for salaried persons, business owners, companies, suppliers, property buyers and sellers, vehicle transactions, banking matters and withholding agents. Because the applicable tax treatment can depend on current status, it is better to verify the live record than rely on an old filer certificate.
What Should You Do If the Result Is Inactive?
First confirm that the CNIC or NTN was entered correctly. Then review the relevant tax year and whether the required income tax return was actually submitted. Depending on the facts, the taxpayer may need an outstanding return, wealth statement, late-filing step, Iris profile correction or registration assistance.
From Status Check to Filing
The natural next steps after verification may include NTN registration, income tax return filing, wealth statement preparation, Iris account recovery, profile correction, ATL compliance review and assistance with FBR notices. The correct step depends on why the taxpayer is not currently active.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a salaried person check filer status with CNIC?
Yes. Use the 13-digit CNIC without dashes.
Does a company use CNIC or NTN?
A company or AOP generally uses its seven-digit NTN for this checker.
Does being registered with FBR mean I am active?
No. Registration and current ATL status are separate.
Can I use this before a property transaction?
Yes. A current ATL check can help confirm the tax status being relied upon for a transaction.
What if my return was filed but the checker shows no active record?
Review the tax year, filing date and current ATL requirements, and confirm that the return was submitted rather than left as a draft.
